Summer Vacay 2011 Part One

Another summer has come to an end. Labor day weekend is upon us and soon school begins. As I write this I am in Clearwater Beach, Florida on my annual vacation with my son and mom. This vacation is one to write about and one for the memory books.

Our journey began on Amtrak from NYC to Tampa. Oh wait, we actually never made it to Tampa because of an earthquake that happened in Virginia so our train, 3 hours delayed, deployed us in Orlando. Amtrak was kind enough to bus us from Orlando to Tampa where my rental car was awaiting us. A 24 hour journey that took about 32 hours and one to never be repeated again. A sigh of relief once we are in the rental on our 45 minute car ride to the hotel. Hurricane Irene must still have had some wind in her because I had to drive through some rain that actually scared the jahibbies (I am not sure that is a word) out of me. I could barely see with the windsheild wipers going a thousand miles a minute. Just like typical Florida weather, soon the sun appears through the clouds, another great relief for me to see.

Each and everyday we went out somewhere, had some pool time, watched the sunset. I really was in a good mind frame to relax and enjoy my time. Here is one of the sunset pictures I took. I was so amazed by the beauty and warmth of the sun in the clouds.

The best time I had was when I took my son and mom to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. This aquarium is none like no other. It is a Rescue, Rehab, Release aquarium and they currently have 2 wonderful dolphins in their facility. Panama is a 35-40 yr old female dolphin rescued about 12 years ago. She is beautiful and sweet. She is also deaf. It was amazing watching the trainers communicate with her and watching her interact with Winter.

As I mentioned there is also Winter. Winter is younger than Panama and the star of a new movie that is hitting theatres this September. Winter is a dolphin who was rescued after she was found trapped in a crab trap and wrapped all up in the wires and rope. The whole movie was filmed at the aquarium and the trainers, volunteers and staff worked hard to prepare Winter for her acting debut. Wait, I forgot to mention what also makes Winter so special. She didn't have a tail fin and so she was fitted with a prosthetic and gets physical therapy everyday. I was so touched by the special relationship she has with her trainer/physical therapist. It was so sweet watching them interact and my strings were pulled in all directions. I am excited to see the movie when it hits the theatres and will continue to donate money to the aquarium. My son actually donated his own $5.00 to the donation box. Of course in good fashion, he spent more of my money on a Winter stuffed animal and notebook with pen. His logic was that it was all for Winter..How could I refuse?

On our way via NYS I-87

I am always up for some adventures and what better way to do that by visiting other soapers? I know I know, I have a new obsession. I can't visit anywhere anymore without having to find or visit soapy friends. Is that bad or do I need an intervention?
This trip was going to take me all the way from Northampton to Boston to Salem, all in of 2 days. I really did have a mission for this trip. First and foresmost, I wanted to finally meet Sheri from Paradise City Herbal. Sheri and I met via social media and I have fallen in love with her herbal living. She and her husband have an amazing Herban Micro Farm. Earlier this summer Sheri contacted me to see if I would be interested in producing her base soap for her on an as needed basis. I was honored because I love Sheri's products and it is super easy to send her 4# logs whenever she needs it. Here is Sheri and I at a local coffee shop. I didn't realize she was so tall, or is it that I am that short?

After visiting Northampton and beautiful Ms. Sheri, we drove over to Boston to have dinner with my gals! I am always excited to see Rose from Brooklyn Bath, Marla from Back Porch Soap and I met Heather a student of Marla's who was an absolute pleasure. We had a fantastic dinner, conversation and of course laughs! We are a silly bunch and find humor in everything. Here is a picture of us after our bellies were filled with some good food.

Next stop was a quick stop at a hotel in Malden MA for some rest before heading off to Salem in the morning. Needless to say as we were pulling up into the hotel parking, we were greated by the crew that likes to blow kisses and grab crotches. Coming from NY I knew this wasn't good. It was 9:30 at night and we were exhausted. I figured let's make the best of this and leave first thing in the morning. Oh another sign that it wasn't a good spot was the hotel check in person was behind plexi glass. Yeah, I would have been better off sleeping in the car! First thing in the morning we were off to Salem to see Lisa from Wunder Budder. We met at the Front Street Coffeehouse and the coffee was great! Lisa and I didn't meet for too long because the rain was coming down hard and we had a 4 hour drive back home. However, next time I will stop again in Salem and tour this quaint little town.

Bubbles and Blazes Central NY Soap Gathering

Yes you heard me correctly when I said there is a Central NY Soap Gathering. Soapmakers are an amazing bunch of men and woman and we LOVE to get together. The planning took a few months with woman like Beth, Cheryl, Karen and Maria (I hope I didn't leave anyone out) who dedicated time and hours to planning the venue, garage sale, food, product swap, yankee swap and FUN!

Many traveled in from all parts of NY - Long Island, NYC, Cortland, Rochester, to name a few. Some traveled in from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. What an amazing group of women and men and all levels of expertise. The day started with the garage sale, which is probably the most deadliest activity ever. Here we are trying to sell things that we don't need but yet we turn around and buy what others are selling. Needless to say the idea of having a pretty empty car trunk was just wishful thinking. I think, I actually had just as much stuff going back home. I was able to pick up some wonderful lavender buds from Cheryl and some Chamomile flowers.

The day proceeded with a column swirl demonstration by Maria and Cheryl and a whipped cream soap demonstration by La Shonda. For me this is the best part, seeing how other techinques are done and feeling confident that I can do it too when I get home. In between all of the planned activities, there were lots of talking, giggling, and sharing stories.

Soapers are a wonderful group of people. There is an array of talent and expertise in the room and the commonality of our passion is evident. However when it came to lunch, it was clear there was also another source of expertise. Everyone brought something to eat and the food was amazing! The picture here doesn't really give it justice but you get an idea how beautiful the spread was.

The day ended just as quick as it began. It was so sad to say goodbye but we all left with new friendships and my heart was beating a soapy beat. On the long ride home from Binghamton I reflected on how lucky I was to be at this event and how lucky I am to have found a passion.

Teaching Spotlight: York College CUNY

On July 16, 2011 I awoke to excitment that I would be introducing 7 eager students to the world of soap making..cold process soapming that is! I had my bags with all the stuff I needed ready and packed by the door. My friend Greg offered to help me by driving me and take photos for me. Although I thanked Greg a thousand times, here is one thousand and one..THANK YOU!

Seven students, three hours and sixty four pounds of soap I was exhausted but had loads of fun. The students ranged from a veteran melt and pour soapmaker, the curious, the naturalist and the excited.

The students were introduced to the world of sodium hydroxide and how this very important ingredient is what makes soap when introduced to oils and butters. They geared up in their protective gear and were ready to get to work.

Here is Suniel from Sri Lanka who was visiting NY with his wife. He saw the course offerings from York College CUNY and signed up right away. He stated he was interested in opening up a warehouse in Sri Lanka and that he would stay in touch with me. He sure has and his questions are wonderful. It is exciting to be an inspiration to him and many others.

The class started with a little fear but half way through, they were excited to see the final product and to begin their soaping journey. It was loads of fun and subsequently have been in regular contact with a few of the students.

I will be back at York College CUNY in October conducting a holiday soap making class. It is time to get yourselves ready for the upcoming holiday season.

30th Avenue..Astoria, NY

Nestled in the Thomas M. Quinn and Sons, Inc building lies the Astoria Historical Society. In all my years of living in Astoria, I never stepped foot in this amazing place. In June I had the honor of attending an event featuring local blogger Annabel Short. The name may sound familiar because on May 8, 2011 Annabel did a writeup about me and my life in Astoria but most importantly as a small business owner in Astoria. You can click here to read the write up, which was featured on May 22, 2011.

Annabel had requested that I speak for a few minutes about being a lifelong resident of Astoria. I chuckled because I am only 38 so I guess that does make me a lifer?! At first I had no clue what I was going to say but after hearing the others speak I knew what I would share. I speak in front of people for a living but boy was I nervous. I talked about how my beginnings started to far away on 36-11 Steinway St, how I lived in Queensbridge Housing, then moved over to 25th Road, 14th St, attended St John's Prep HS and how I have been on 30th Ave for about 20 years now. I talked about why this feels like a community and how I am proud to be raising my son here. However I was also honest and real to say that my community is starting to feel like someone else's community because all the mom and pop shops are gone, the rent is getting to high and I am feeling the pinch. I also mentioned my business, Naturally Good Soaps, LLC and how I felt that this was a true 30th Ave business. I am not coming in from another part of the city setting up shop because it is now the place to be. I talked about how I run my business at night when my son is asleep and I hope to one day own commercial property here and employ a few locals. I talked about how I see my business as a true mom and pop shop but hope that I can afford to do so.

Overall it was wonderful and exciting and I was honored to be a part of this great exhibit.

Pleasant Valley Lavender Farm: Morganville, NJ

Today 2 of my Soapy Pals, Donna from Ekoaromas and Eva from Soapistication and Gnosis Body Care went on a day trip to Pleasant Valley Lavender Farm located in Morganville, NJ. Eva and I were traveling in from Astoria, NY and it took us no longer than 1 hour and 15 mns. Of course these 2 city girls missed the right hand turn we needed to make and then of course we found our way and again missed the farm which was on the left hand side. We just laughed and realized GPS is so important for moments like this!! Donna was already there awaiting us and luckily didn't have to wait too long.

We were so happy to be out of NYC and enjoy NJ air, lavender all around us, 10 acres of greenery and great people. Ellen and her husband were gracious and hospitable. Their daughter made amazing sugar lavender cookies which were sooooo gooodddd!!! We also had a great lavender infused lemonade and lavender infused butter with bread.

We cut lavender and bought some soap, and received samplings of their soap and culinary lavender. We sat for about 2 hours on the tables and chairs just talking and relaxing. It was a perfect day and a great opportunity for us to build our friendship.

We look forward to going back!

Third Root Community Health Center - Herbal Foundation Level 1

As many of you know, I have been throwing myself into the wonderful world of herbs and their medicinal properties. For about 2 years, I have read books, followed Susan Weed, took a course with Robin Rose Bennett, watch John Gallagher from learnherbs.com and thought about actually going to school for Herbal Studies. A friend of mine, who I refer to as my "Green Sista" introduced me to Third Root located in Brooklyn, NY. I decided to make the investment in taking the level 1 foundation course. It was a long 12 weeks and there were times where I wanted to give up. To be honest, my frustration was more due to the mass transit system in NYC being so wacky on the weekends, that traveling from Queens to Brooklyn on train would sometimes take 2 hours. I am glad to say I stuck it through!! It was a wonderful experience and like many of my classmates want to take this year to absorb the 30 herbs we studied, learn more about them, and grow. We will be back for Level 2, hopefully next Spring 2012.

I will share that we had to do presentations on whatever we wanted. I decided to do Skin and Herbs and my little paper and presentation left me feeling good but I felt better when both of my teachers stated that I am doing Level 3 work! Woo Hoo!! Holy Cannoli, was I surprised by that! I am truly humbled and grateful to them.

HSMG Soap Conference 2011

Good Afternoon, I am reporting live, from my desk, from NYC!!!

Ok, ok, ok, I know. What I should be saying is, "I am tweeting, facebooking and blogging LIVE FROM MIAMI!!". As you probably know, I didn't make it to the 14th annual HSMG Soap Conference that is being held at the Hilton Downtown Miami hotel. For the record I will say that I am kicking myself in the butt with Rose from Brooklyn Bath, LaVida from LaVida Given by Nature and Rochell from Karess Krafters. We are acting cool about it but deep down, we are kicking and screaming like 2 year olds because we are excited for our fellow soapmakers who are having a blast.

I have a direct drip line via my tweetdeck desk application and my heart is racing as the pictures, updates and happiness I am reading.

So in about a year from now, we will be at the 15th Annual Conference and the rumor is it will be held in the Pacific Northwest. As an East Coast girl, I needed to google Pacific Northwest and saw that it encompasses Washington State, Oregon, Montana and Idaho. I am hoping it is in Washington St or Oregon. I actually love the state of Oregon and am itching to go back. I plan to save after the summer is over so I can attend. Wow, next year is going to be a great year for me! I am turning 40 (yes you heard me), I am treating myself to a trip to Tuscany and going to the Soap Conference! What is better than that??

Why I Love Making Soap

I began learning about soap and aromatherapy in 2003. I wanted to begin making products for myself and family and I wanted to do it naturally. I thought that if I was going to convert to locally grown and organic foods, then I need to also take care of my skin using the same holistic ingredients. I fell in love with the fact that I can use everyday items to enhance my skin. Believe me when I tell you that this quickly became an obession; a good obessesion of course. The more you learn and read about all the chemicals that go into making a product that we put on our skin everyday, it becomes scary.

What I love most about making soap and bath and body products is the amazing group of people you meet along your journey. I have friends all over the United States, UK and Australia. We all have a different approach to how our final products look but we all have a common goal; beautiful handmade products.

I really didn't believe that I can have a business, until about 2009. I knew working a full time job and raising a son on my own that I would have to make the time to make this work. There are times where it can be challenging, but the best challenge is succeeding. The little accomplishments I make everyday, from filing to obtain my LLC, to having money to order supplies, to making time to manage the website is all worth it when a customer expresses their love for your product.

Prospect Park Herb Walk Brooklyn, NY

On a beautiful Saturday on May 7, 2011 I took a herb walk with my fellow classmates from the Third Root Community Center Herbal Foundation Course 1. I was so excited about this because I was able to now but the names to the "faces" of these herbs and also be able to explore Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

All of my senses were on overload. I couldn't get enough of the beauty before me. I really felt like a kid in a candy store and I took pictures of everything. In this last week, I have been looking at trees, shrubs, flowers, plants with a whole new lens. There is a part of me that giggles because I feel like they are jumping out at me screaming, "what's my name?" I know it sounds silly but it is the honest truth. I appreciate their beauty in a different way and I wish I could just identify each and every living green plant. I know in time I will be able too. For now I will appreciate the 15 or so that I already know.

The picture I have here is of Golden Rod (Solidago canadensis). Golden Rod is used to help those with arthritis, bladder stones, diarrhea, indigestion and eczema. The Herbal Shelf

In the last few months I have become more and more interested in herbs and infusing them in olive oil. I always am in search of a good method of organization without having to spend so much money. I was able to salvage shelves from my office and are using these to store my precious herbs. I was lucky to have collected 9 of these shelves and they are actually scattered throughout my apartment for my books and photos. I love how the herbs look on the shelves and now I can see each and every single herb filled container.

Please forgive me; I know I am the world's worst blogger. I really do have good intentions but just can't seem to sit down long enough to get some great thoughts out of my head. Here is my plan that I am putting into place to keep me in line. Sunday mornings with a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice I am going to blog about the following:

my new herb shelf and herbs that I am falling in love with
reorganization of my soap studio and working space
upcoming classes I will be offering and where I will be teaching
a featured soap tool that I have discovered and can't seem to live without
highlighting my products and their special qualities

NYC Soapers Swap

On February 27th I, with the help of Erin and Angela, we will be hosting the first NYC Soapers Swap. Erin, owner of Soapsmiths (Brooklyn) and Angela owner of Alegna (Long Island) and 7 other wonderful soapers are going to meet, network, talk soapy trash, eat, and swap our goodies with one another. We are also receiving donations from some wonderful local suppliers. Garden State Naturals, pictured to the left, have generously donated a whole bunch of samplings of oils and butters. We will post pictures and are on the official count down until the fun begins!

Wow can you believe it is 2011 already? Where did 2010 go? It seems as I get older the time goes by super fast! I spent 2010 embracing the idea that I am a small business owner and in doing so I worked hard on establishing Naturally Good Soaps. 2011 is going to be the year that I grow and allow for opportunities to take hold of NGS.

Making bath and body products is a wonderful industry to be part of. I have met some wonderful business owners along the way and I wanted to take this time to thank them for their friendship and guidance. I have met many of the following of people via social media. It really is a great way to meet and connect without paying for a plane ticket. Mary from Annie's Goat Hill Soap is a soapmaker from Ohio and I am a fan of her goat milk soap. Mary has a wonderful farm with many goats and boxers. Her goat milk soap is luxurious and beautiful. I thank Mary for her continued support and friendship and her knowledge. Another wonderful person is Rose from Brooklyn Bath. She has been my partner in crime when it comes to our adventures in NYC. Rose currently resides in Boston but when she comes to NYC to visit family, she always has time for us to seek out events that can help our business' grow. You have to see the many emails we send to one another when we discover new things. Another person who I wanted to give a shout out to is Sheri from Paradise City Herbal. Sheri is an amazing woman with a just as amazing garden she is converting to a micro-farm. Sheri's products have helped me with rosacea and her knowledge and passion have inspired me to embrace and love herbs. Of course there are many, many more people I want to thank and I hope to do so in the near future.

I also wanted to share some professional connections I have made and these people inspire me each and everyday. I have become a huge fan of Marla from Back Porch Soap. Marla is a wonderful business consultant with a wealth of information. There are very few organizations I would give my hard earned money to but Marla is one that I make sure I save for because she provides one on one consultations that any new business owner could use. Then there is Donna Marie from The Indie Beauty Business Network. Donna Marie provides a wealth of information about the industry and has built an amazing network for members to connect with. It is hard to feel isolated and alone in this industry when the truth is there are many producers of bath and body products from the hobbyist to the manufacturer who all support each other.

My goals for 2011 already have begun and I look forward to providing quality products for you.

Good Morning!
I can't believe it is already November and the holidays are amongst us. I guess I should start planning Thanksgiving dinner! The hardest part for me during this time of year is the fact that the sun goes early and the nights just seem longer. I enjoy the sun and the warmth it brings. On this night, it was summer time and the warmth with slight breeze was perfect for a July day.

I do love sunsets and think they are magnificent.

Day of Glam

On Sunday, September 26, 2010 I participated in a Day of Glam that my friend, Annette was sponsoring. She had asked me a few weeks back if I wanted to come by her house and set up a table of my soapy goods since she is a sales rep for Stella and Dot. It was fun having the girls come over for some amazing wine and cheese and sharing my products with them. Actually one of the husbands was very excited that I had an Oats N' Honey soap. He loves oats and when I told him there is a touch of honey he immediately said "I will take one!" LOL

This was my first house party and I am excited to do some more. It is a great way of getting my products out there and having the experience of planning an event.

Oh My - My New Obsession...Silicone Molds!

Now that I am growing in my soap making company, Naturally Good Soaps, I have developed a new obsession...Silicone Molds!! Oh my there are so many and they are so fun! I also think I like them because I don't have to line them with freezer paper like you have to do with wooden log molds. I just looked at Whole Sale Supplies Plus and they have so many cute silicone molds, that I think I hear my fingers typing my credit card number in their shopping cart real soon!

The molds in this picture are some of my new ones. The metal one I purchased at a cake supply store in NYC for only $5.00! I figured when I start making bath fizzies, this may make a great mold. The silicone molds I bought at Michael's using my 50% off coupon, so they were both $5.00 each as well! Woo Hoo...love discounts! I thought the circle mold would be great for my new sugar scrubs.

In Production this Saturday

Today I had plans to work on the website and get it done. Of course there are always glitch in my weekends that my son is supposed to be with his dad so this plan was nixed. To work on the photos and descriptions would have taken too long and my son would not be happy that I wasn't paying any attention to him. So I just decided to weigh out my oils to get ready for some late night production. Here I have my olive oil, almond and castor oil for the Detox Soap and the calendula infused oil olive, almond and castor oil for the Baby So Gentle Soap. I have a pot already with the shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil to be melted down in the kitchen. At least the day wasn't completely wasted!

A Day to Never Be Forgotten - 9/11

Today is a sad day in history. Many lives have been changed forever because of attacks to our country. I will never forget the day when I too was supposed to be in the area for a meeting that was canceled the night prior. My office phone rang at 4:50 pm. I never pick up the phone a few minutes before I am supposed to leave because I don't want to deal with last minute issues. For some reason I picked up the phone and the voice on the other end was one that was familiar. She told me she apologized for calling at the last minute but that the meeting we had scheduled was canceled and not to show up. I thought oh great, no worries then! Instead that morning I decided to head to the post office to send a care package to one of my clients who was in college. As I stood on the line I watched NY1 and saw the planes crashing into the towers. At first I thought to myself "Geez, whoever thinks this makes a great movie sure has poor taste!" Of course it took me minutes to realize it wasn't a movie, but it was real. My life has never been the same again..

New Web Host - Host Papa!!

I finally changed web hosts!! I know you are probably asking why I am excited about this and the answer is that I have been wanting to do it for some time and finally made the move. I had my domain name and website hosted with a trusted company here in NYC. They were wonderful to work with and I never had any problems with them. However I wanted to switch to a host that was "green" to go more in line with my business and personal lifestyle.
After some research and asking fellow colleagues what they use, I decided to switch to Host Papa. Host Papa is a powered by 100% certified green renewable energy sources. This means that their data centers, web servers, office computers, laptops and office space is managed by wind and solar power energy. How cool is that? The transition will be a learning curve for me since I have a lot of work to do on website as far as updating products and information. However the life of a small business owner is never a dull moment.

Lavender by The Bay - East Marion, NY

This summer I had visited Greenport Long Island and feel in love with this quaint little town. A while back I had googled lavender in NY and came across the farm of Lavender by the Bay in East Marion, NY. I didn't realize how close it was to Greenport so on my second visit out on the island, I decided to pay them a visit.

The second I drove up to the location, I was pulled back to 2004 when I visited Provence, France. The lavender aroma was incredible and I was in heaven. The lavender field is incredible and the barn is filled with Lavender goodies. There was satchels, lavender by the pound, prints of lavender, custom made cards, honey, herbs, linens and a beautiful portrait of a lavender field that retailed for $1,000.00.

I had bought a bunch of freshly picked lavender. I was instructed to separate it into 3 bunches and tie them together to be dried upside down. Within 5 days the lavender dried beautifully and I have them all throughout the house. I love the way they look and smell and wish I had bought more.

Name That Berry!!

Walking home from the health food store I came across this beautiful bush of berries. I immediately thought it was elderberries but then looked it up when I got home and realized they weren't. The berries are a beautiful purple and are strong to the touch. They hang in a beautiful cluster and I was so tempted to pick it but decided it was best to leave it.

Ever since I took classes with Robin Rose Bennett at the Open Center, I have looked at trees, shrubs, weeds, leaves, flowers and all plant life with a different eye. I am amazed as the variety of plant life that exists all around us, even in the city!

So if you can help me identify this beautiful berry I would be grateful..

Natural Bed Bug Spray

I am here in sunny Florida and I am enjoying my time! However prior to getting here I was in panic mode over the bed bug issue going on in several states, one including my own, NY.

I came a cross a recipe I found online and decided to make it and share it with you. I don't remember where I found it from however I will look again for it and give credit to the author.

All you need is 2 8 oz blue or amber glass spray bottles or you can do 4 4oz I also suggest using distilled or spring water vs. tap water.

Natural Bed Bug Spray
1 cup of distilled or spring water
10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
10 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
5 drops of Clove Essential Oil

Mix well and before each use shake the spray bottle.

This recipe smells divine for you bad bad for the bed bugs!!

Hellloooo!!!

Oh my I didn't realize I have been away from blog since the beginning of June! I am so very sorry that I have been a bad blogger!! I hope you can forgive me and know that I have been really busy and productive.

Let's see the first great thing to happen was I had received my first wholesale order from Greeny's Natural Market from Shelter Island NY. The owner Jen is fantastic and her market is just the cutest! I am proud to be on Greeny's shelves and look forward to our growing relationship.

The second has been my growing interest and love for herbs. I always was fascinated by herbs but was also intimidated by them. I took a 3 day course at the New York Open Center , with herbalist and Wise Woman Traditionalist Robin Rose Bennett. She was amazing and I left each class with a new found respect, love and admiration. I am hoping to take the online courses with Susan Weed who is based in Woodstock NY.

I just can't begin to explain the internal excitement I am feeling and experiencing. I feel like a kid in candy store when I order my herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs and I just want to order the whole website! LOL Silly I know but that is how I feel.

I will be on vacation next week and my plan is to plan for my new products and new website design. I know I am supposed to be on vacation but I feel like this will be the best time to be productive in the sun!

Paradise City Herbal

On May 14, 2010 I blogged about my Rosecea and my struggle with the havoc it is causing on my face. I mentioned briefly about a wonderful woman named Sheri Pearce who is the owner of Paradise City Herbal. I decided to write more about Sheri and the products I have purchased from her because I don't feel I did her justice. Just for the record, Sheri by no means has paid me or begged me to write about her company. I am doing this because I really believe in her as a person, herbalist, formulator and soapy friend. I also believe in her products since I have been using them for about 2 months now.

I had purchased the Sunshine collection because of the infusion of Calendula in her cream, toner and mask. I chose it to be unscented because of my Rosecea I wanted it as simple as possible and wanted the powers of the Calendula to come through on its own.

Let me start with the Facial Toner. I have used toners in the past but they always left my skin feeling stung, tingly and raw. The Sunshine Toner doesn't do that at all. Could it be because it contains all natural ingredients that are soft on the skin? In my opinion YES. I follow it up with the Moisturizing Cream and this cream doesn't sit heavy on the skin. A little of this goes a long way. It soaks into the skin and my face feels so soft. What I also like is that my skin has regained some of it's glow despite the Rosecea. I am sure the little Rosecea bugs in my skin are screaming as they see my finger with a bit of cream on the tip coming its way! "No please don't smother us in that natural, chemical free, skin friendly, skin loving cream!!!!!"

So for the Mask, today I used it for the first time. Of course whenever I put a mask on, I always ask my son if I look sexy. See he is 5 and he is just too honest for himself! So he did tell me I looked like Shrek, because the mask had a green tone to it due to the clay that is used. However once it was off, he did tell me I looked like Princess Fiona! Oh did I feel super special! Although I only used the mask once, it does feel nice.

My Time in Tampa Florida

I am writing this blog from the Tampa International Airport. It is 4 something in the morning and I should be home back in NY sleeping in my bed. However as they say make lemonade out of lemons? Or at least something like that.

I arrived to Tampa on Wednesday to attend a conference for my day job, or at least how I like to label it, the job that pays the bills. It was held at the beautiful Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort and yes it was beautiful. The days were clear and warm and the conference was informative. I didn't sneak out of workshops to hang out on the beach, I was a good paid employee who took in all the information and took good notes.

Friday comes and I don't have a flight out until 6:55 pm. Enough time for me to make it over to see Trista at Indigo Bee Soap in South Tampa. I love meeting up with other soapers and learning form them. Trista was gracious and welcomed me as if we were old high school buddies. I was glad to make the detour but also glad that I would be going home soon.

Now back to why I am still sitting at the airport. Long story short, flight was delayed until 9:30 then it was canceled because the crew was over 4 minutes on their time and it was deemed "unsafe" for them to continue to work. I don't think they thought it was deemed unsafe to strand a plane full of passengers. I will give props were props are due. The crew did supply us with drinks and snacks and tried to get us on the next flight or help accommodate. They were able to get me on a flight back to NY on Saturday at 11:50 am. I took it. I wasn't going to fight and for sure I wasn't going to cause a scene that would end me up in county jail.

Soon I will be home hugging and kissing my 5 year old who has been eagerly awaiting my presence. In the midst of all of this I have been thinking about the soaps I have to make when I get home..Ahhh the life of a soaper!! LOL

My Least Favorite Subject: Rosecea

This time last year, I woke up one morning with pimples and redness in my face. I really didn't think anything of it and figured it would just go away. Time had gone by and I noticed my face becoming red, shiny, tight, pimply, dry and at times oily. I realized something was wrong but for some reason I just really thought it would go away.

Jump forward to January 2010 - the skin problem didn't go away and I knew I needed to do something. I began to accept the fact that I had Rosecea. Rosecea is a chronic disease which appears as usually first appears as subtle reddening on the face. Over time this may develop into some inflammation and be accompanied by skin eruptions. This skin condition usually appears in people between the ages of 30-60 and although the reasons as to why rosecea happens it it thought to be due to lifestyle, diet and stress. Stress, CHECK! However I do admit to having an addiction to pasta, carbs and bread.

I started seeing Dr Cori from the Healthpoint Nutrition Center for the chance to change my body in a holistic way. Dr Cori inquired about my skin and stated that she can help me with that.
I began to cut flour and sugar out of my diet, a difficult task but manageable. I learned to live with the fact that my ex-husband is who he is and I couldn't allow him to stress me in the way he has. Besides the reality is I am stuck with him since we have a son together. So I better learn how to manage or I will be one big pimple head for another 13 years!!

I also do not like using chemicals on my face or body, externally or internally so I contacted Sheri from Paradise City Herbal in Northampton, MA. Sheri makes amazing skin loving products using the herbs she grows organically in her garden. I thought her Sunshine Cream could help ease my discomfort and tightness that I was experiencing. About 3 weeks have gone by and I can honestly say that I haven't felt better. I still have pimples and experience shyness and fear about going outdoors with this "stuff" on my face but the feel of my skin is incredible. It isn't tight, dry or irritated. A little of this cream does go a long way so I know I will have this product for a while. I thank Sheri for being an incredible formulator and lover of nature. The Soap Studio

As some of you know I have been wanting to have a space where I can call my own. I live in a 2 bedroom railroad apartment in Astoria, NY and so space is difficult to come by. I started feeling less productive since I had my raw products all over the place. I decided that I needed to create a space that I can work, be productive, and be happy. So you are wondering what I did right? Well I gave up my bedroom. Yes, you heard me correctly, I gave up my bedroom! I gave my bedroom to my son, since he is getting big and needed more space and I took his room.

My son sweetly asked where was I going to sleep and I told him that I could sleep on the sofa bed. I explained that sometimes we needed to make sacrifices in order to achieve our goals and dreams. He told me that I could always sleep with him which really is sweet but couldn't happen since he has a twin bed and sleeps like a hot mess!

So for now I only have a picture of the color of the wall and soon I will post more pics of the complete studio, shelves and all. Please note my good luck charms. The middle one is my son's first place winnings at Olympic Day at school. That one is my favorite - for obvious reasons.

Poor Racoon!

Today I decided to go take a walk and enjoy a bit of the sun on my lunch break. As a co-worker and I were walking on Lexington Ave between 79th and 80th St, we noticed people were looking into the sky. Of course we looked and didn't understand what the hoopla was all about. A woman walking behind us stated that there was a racoon in the tree. A racoon on Lexington Ave? Oh boy this little guy or girl was far from home. Of course I decided to call 311 for assistance. 311 is the NYC's phone line for non emergency related information. 311 is also a way for city agencies to monitor complaints or issues for better quaility service. My cousin was trained as a 311 operator when he was in college and he even stated it was a joke. They have a database of all the city, state and federal agencies and if someone calls to inform the city of garbage strewn all over a street or a fowl odor is coming through walls, then the approriate agency is notified and the situation is (hopefully) resolved.

So that brings me back to the racoon. I called 311 and the woman who answered the call pretty much chuckled on the phone and asked me what I wanted her to do about the racoon. I stated that I was concerned because the racoon is in the tree and I would like someone to come and rescue it and release it to its natural surroundings. This operator proceeded to read to me a scripted piece about how racoons like to hide in trees, how they are known to be seen in urban communities and yada yada yada. I was perplexed because it sounded like a story I would read to my 5 yr old and the fact that she considered Lexington Ave and 79th St an urban community. This is the Upper East Side lady, there is nothing urban about this area!

Needless to say I learned a thing or two about NYC 311:

1 - only call if you are concerned about what side of the street you need to park on

2 - only call if you have an issue with a parking violation

3 - only call if you need to locate a towed vehicle

May I note, that this is the second time I called in regards to an animal and the city just brushed me off, I guess NYC isn't animal friendly.

Well I have been working hard on trying to make Naturally Good Soaps as eco-friendly as possible. The details are tremendous and at times overwhelming. It is not just about the products that are made but the packaging, the materials used for shipping, storing, and the web hosting. I am committed to making NGS, an eco-friendly, skin friendly, soul friendly company. I also think about when the time comes and I relocate to a production/warehouse site, I want to use as much natural sun as possible, solar paneling, the works. When I go for something I go big time, no holding back!

Well I am off to my son's school for Parent Appreciation Day! Until then..Much soapy happiness!

I Am Walking Through the Door

Sometimes one doesn't know where life will take you. We can dream, we can hope, we can pray. Other times we need to hold our breath and take the leap of faith. This leap, I have taken and there is no turning back.

In 2004 I had taken an Entrepreneurial Assistance Program out of the Queens Borough President's Office in Queens, NY. Here is where I started my journey into small business ownership under the tutelage of Rev. Nigel Pearce (he wasn't a Reverend when I met him but since has become one). I always told Rev. Nigel that I was fearful of succeeding and so with that he allowed me to grow at my own pace. Life as well became overwhelming and so I put my soapy dreams on hold. However, I never stopped learning, studying, played around with recipes for soap and bath products.

Here comes 2009 and like a baby who is crawling one day and walking the next, I decided it was time to get this going. I started making soap, participated in indie craft fairs, starting selling to family and friends, created a website, started getting connected to other soapermakers and there was no stopping me. I knew that I needed to make the call that would change my life forever. I always kept in touch with Rev. Nigel via email and always felt his support via his words. I finally asked to see him so I can bounce some ideas off of him and share with him what I have been doing. I prepared for 2 weeks as if I was studying for some state exam and had a 6 page "report" I was going to share with him. He was excited and elated to see and hear my excitement. He kept saying, "you had it in 2004 and you still have it now". I knew from this moment on I was going to open doors that I kept closed for so many years.

Rev. Nigel has given me some homework to do and also set up a meeting for meet another local woman business owner, Lisa from Robbie Dawg, Inc.(www.robbiedawg.com). Lisa has her manufacturing plant in Red Hook (Brooklyn), NY and I am so excited about this meeting. I have loads of questions for Lisa, some probably naive others out of curiosity.

My journey has begun, I am no longer peaking from behind the door but I am standing in front of it. I hope in a few months from now I am sharing with you my journey in securing a warehouse, ordering drums of oils, setting up accounts and probably sharing some of my fears.

I Am the WINNER!!

I am not one to play the lotto or to enter contests because I always think I am not going to win. However on Wednesday February 10th my luck changed. I entered a contest given by Honey Bee Soaps (http://www.honeybeesoaps.com/) on her Wordless Wednesday blog entry. I commented on her picture and not because I thought I could win but because I really liked her Valentine's Day soaps.

To my surprise, I was the winner!! Woo Hoo how exciting it was to receive the email that I WON!

I received my package at work and my co-workers were laughing at me because I was ripping the box open as if the Hope Diamond was awaiting me. I was so giddy like a kid in a candy store when I saw the soap samples, lotion and lip balm. I LOVE getting soaps from fellow soapmakers. I love to see their creativity in the final product.

Happy Day of Love

I apologize this post comes 4 days after Valentine's Day however I was striken with the stomach bug and so I spent the day on my sofa under a huge blanket. I wanted to share with you my son's contribution for his school's Valentine's Day party via the picture I have posted.

My son couldn't be at school that day because he had an eye appointment that couldn't be missed. However I had him make bags for his friends and we filled it with candy delights. I brought the bag to school and made arrangements for him to come back at dismissal time to get his bag of goodies. How cute was it to see the girls skretch "Juan, Juan we missed you"!! How funny is that to hear 4 and 5 year olds screaming as if they just saw one of stars of Twilight! LOL

I may not have a Valentine's husband or boyfriend, but I have an amazing little boy who is all I need. As a single mom I try hard to teach him at his sweet age to be respectful of girls, although they are icky at this time. I always tell him that you think they are icky now but wait another 10 years, you are going to be mesmorized by them.

NYC Snowy Forecast

It has been reported throughout the week that NYC is to expect a snow storm like no other. I normally don't get too excited because our snow storms do not compare to those of when I was a child in the 70's. However, the Dept of Education and my son's school St Joseph's have posted on their websites "SCHOOL IS CLOSED TOMORROW DUE TO THE INCLEMENT WEATHER". I chuckled because as a child I was always sent to school no matter what and of course I was planning the same for my son. I will say that I will report to work tomorrow and my son will stay home with his great grandma. My 87 year old grandmother, bless her heart, is packing up her stuff from her home in Riverdale to spend the next few days in my home to care for my son. It is times like this I appreciate family and appreciate the days we have with her.

I wish all my readers much luck tomorrow and be safe. Oh by the way, how ironic, it was this same woman who would send me to school with a 103 fever and she is the first to call me to tell me to keep my son home!

My Presentation at the HealthPoint Nutrition Center

Part of what I have been doing to get exposure for my budding business, Naturally Good Soaps, I partake in events in the community and try to keep up with Twitter and Facebook. I am aware that this is just one of a few ways to get my mission accomplished. When my HealthCare Nutritionist, Dr Cori Stern-Torres asked that I speak about my business at a workshop she was having on Skin and Beauty, I was elated and jumped on it.

I spent about a week putting ideas together and samples and was excited about the prospects. I even wrote out a little speech like one would do when they are up for a Grammy award.

I have attended a few of Dr Cori's workshops so I understood that she uses the angle of you are what you eat to speak about the specific topic at hand. I also took that approach and started with "Dr Cori is here to get your insides healthy and I am here to get your outsides healthy!" I don't know how I come up with this!! LOL

I really just shared how when we work hard to get our health to a point where we are healthy, not dependant on high blood pressure medication etc, we need to do the same for our skin. Our skin is the protector of our inside organs so why would we want to detroy it? I talked a bit about how when you read a food label, you need to start making this a practice in reading a cosmetic label. I explained how I started my business and for what reasons. I shared that you don't have to spend millions and buy that .5 oz cream that has whale sperm in it for $999.99 to obtain healthy beauty. They laughed, they nodded, they smiled. I welcomed them to their new journey and wished them so much luck.

I will say, I do presentations professionally however this was different. I am not sure it was because I am now feeling like a small business owner with the potential to be successful. All I know is that I liked it and I am ready for more.

Have Been MIA but For Good Reason

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

I apologize for being gone since my last blog but I have been busy with good things happening for me and Naturally Good Soaps. However, before I begin, I have taken an oath and will make a committment to blog at least once a week.

Since my last blog I wrote about my ventures with my new approach to my health. I have been seeing Dr Cori Sterns-Torres from the HealthPoint Nutritional Center and in 5 weeks so much has happened. I went in for typical issues, like stress, anxiety, poor body image, Rosecea and insomnia. Boy it seems like a lot when you write it out and read it! In my time with Dr Cori, I have averaged about 1 lb a week of weight loss, sleeping has improved tremendously, energy level is high, stress is manageable, anxiety - what is that? LOL Most importantly, I am liking ME!! As part of my individual plan I had to cut out sugar and flour and that has been difficult but well worth it. Oh yeah how can I forget, my Rosecea seems to be going away slowly. I no longer have glowing red cheeks!

I will continue on this plan for about a year but with a life long of changes and results.

I begin this blog with an apology for not writing in some time. I have been so caught up with the holidays and taking a week off from work to stay home with my son.

Needless to say I was looking forward to beginning the new year because of all the possibilities that lie ahead of me. I ended 2009 a bit more confident and self assured in my soap business. I also had many sales that just confirmed that I am making the right decision in pursuing my passion. I also was beginning the new year with a visit to Dr. Cori Stern-Torres, at the HealthPoint Nutrition and Chiropractic Center (http://www.healthpointnutrition.com/).

I met Dr. Cori back in May 2008 at a Craft Event where she was talking to people about Nutrition Response Therapy. I went over to her table and she performed a 5 minute analysis and was able to confirm what I thought. She asked that I come in for an evaluation and begin treatment. As with many things I encounter in my life, when something is good for me and it produces positive change for some reason, I back off until I am really ready.

This brings me to November 2009, I was feeling sluggish, fatigued, couldn't lose a pound, horrible cravings for chocolate or any type of sweets. I decided it was time to call Dr. Cori; the best decision I could have made for myself. January 2, 2010 at 11 am I was finally in the office of Dr. Cori and I am glad I was there! After an evaluation and a discussion, the culprit to my blah feelings were SUGAR! Dr. Cori said I had to cut sugar out of my diet and the journey to my health recovery will begin. I didn't know if I should be elated because now I had an answer or if I had to grieve my sweet tooth and my love for cake! In reality, I know it is the best thing for me and I am now more determined than ever to follow through and live a much more sugar free happy life.

I mentioned earlier, that I tend to run from things that are positive because of my insecurities. I can say with confidence that I am so very much looking forward to 2010 for a number of reasons:

1- a healthier lifestyle

2- nurturing my soap business

3- smiling more and feeling better

4- finally taking control of my life and my happiness!

So I say adios to sugar and hello to feeling free!!

Ah...Thanksgiving is now but a memory, although I am sure many of you are still eating leftovers. I am not a fan of the Black Friday shopping craze, however I will shop online at all hours of the day and night. My mom and I love going to Sugar Loaf NY the day after Thanksgiving to spend money at a craft village. Sugar Loaf Art and Craft Village is a community of craftspeople and artists nestled under the Sugar Loaf Mountain in Orange County, NY. It is a distinguised crafts community of over 250 years. It remains true to its heritage as the year round home to independent artisans and crafters many of whom live and work in the original barns and buildings that date back to the 1700's. Angela and her husband JP host wine tastings and allow local small business owners the opportunity to showcase their products. It was great to see so many people attend the wine tasting and also show an interest in the items we had available for them to take. One man felt guilty about taking a lip balm and soap sample that I made him take 2!

For me it was also a nice way to meet my neighbors and to share the process of making soap and my aspirations for my business.

Crock Pot Hot Process Soap

As I am getting comfortable in my role as a small business owner, I am also getting comfortable in experimenting with new recipes. Last night, oh let's say around 10ish, I decided to make soap using the crock pot hot process method. Confidently I got all my supplies together and was really excited about trying something new. It was actually pretty fun and I was in awe as to how the soap was cooking right before my eyes.

To my surprise the whole process was simple and beautiful to watch from start to finish. I am not sure if I will do this again but I do enjoy having the option of knowing I can.

The Fun is Just Beginning

What a great weekend! I had donated soaps to a fundraising event that took place last night. It was to benefit the flood victims of the Phillipines and it was fun. I wish I could have stayed but the mere fact that someone reached out to me and asked for my assistance felt great! Trust me I keep checking because I am excited to see who bid for my soaps!!

I also spent the weekend meeting up with grammer school friends, many I haven't seen, since 1986. That was a blast and always fun when getting together with people who were a big part of one's life.

Sunday was just the day to go over and update my website, my etsy site and taking more pictures and developing more products. I was able to accomplish making my Lavender Lotion Bar and I was about to work on the Whipped Body Butters but I am going to admit to being too tired. The hardest part was actually making the labels. No one can't say this isn't a total hands on business!! LOL

No matter what I am having so much fun in my ventures and I hope if you get to purchase one of my items, you feel it too!

Oh Boy Please Don't Let Me Get Sick!

I have been holding my breath since September that my son doesn't come home sick. Wishful thinking knowing that he is now in "Big Boy School" {PreK} and anything is possible. Last night around 2 am he woke up full of energy but quickly starting coughing and then alas the first sneeze arrived. All I could do is say to myself, "self, let's hope he doesn't get a fever". He didn't develop a fever however I knew I had to keep him home because I didn't want to make it to work and then get the PHONE CALL! I also had no idea that my mom was staying home as well for feeling under the weather. Oh my!

In one minute I was thinking ok, I would be home with a sick child and I can work on my website then it changed to soup maker, laundry attendant and nurse all in one. As long as everyone is well and recovers I don't mind if I couldn't work on my website.

The life of a mom!!

I had a great time taking pictures for my website. I needed to take pictures so JulieHoogDesigns from Etsy.com could create a banner for me. I was obsessed with taking pictures of my soaps near water, on rocks with the Manhattan syline somewhere visible. I think I was able to accomplish this!!

Website Adventures

For years I was terrified of starting my website because I thought it was just too hard. To my surprise it hasn't been too bad. I have been working on my website nightly when my son is asleep as I try not to fall asleep on my keyboard. It has been liberating in many ways. It has empowered me to go full steam ahead with my business and I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I am excited to finish it up with my pictures and my shopping cart. I am a true believer in supporting other small business, work at home mom businesses/stay at home mom businesses and woman businesses. I have been working with a wonderful woman from Ct who is creating my banner and my new logo design.

I realize that one has to take baby steps or giant leaps to see their dreams come true. I believe I am at the giant leap stage because I feel unstopable!

Naturally Good Soaps is ALIVE!!

Finally after some weeks of working on the website, while formulating recipes and products, I am proud to announce that Naturally Good Soaps is ALIVE. Well I should say semi-alive. I have not enabled the shopping carts or posted up pictures but I wanted to at least have people view the site while I am working on it. I already have received great comments on it and I am excited to finish it and have it running.

I am beyond elated and proud of myself. I didn't think I could do it, but YES I CAN!!

I am beginning to see how time is so critical to a new business. Time, at times (no pun intended), I feel as if I don't have but need to make a priority. There is Something Different in the Air Around Me.

As the summer seems to dwindling down, or what we have had of summer, I am beginning to enjoy the cool nights. Fall is soon upon us and I am starting to get the bug to get creative and make my soaps. I don't like it much when I get into slumps and can't find my groove. I am eager to work on new creations and add more products to my line.

For some reason there seems to be something different in the air that surrounds me. This weekend was a holiday weekend for many. I spent this weekend with my son exploring Farmer's Markets, a street fair and just meeting up with friends for lunch. Everytime we would come home to wind down from the day's activities, my son and I would sit on the couch and talk about the days events. Although he is only 4 1/2 he is quite inquisitive and really has a great sense of self. As I looked at him and began thinking about where the time had gone because I feel like I just gave birth to him yesterday, I started to feel different. This usually comes to me when I realize he is at the next phase of his life. He is starting Pre-K tomorrow and I really see my son as a little boy, a little boy who I hope grows up to be a great man.

Now I feel it is the time to get my new baby off it's feet. I can't allow for obstacles, either big or small to get in my way anymore. I have to remind myself that what I do is for him, for us, for our future.

Wow I haven't written in about one month! I wish I could say it is because I have been having fun making soap but it isn't. I have been so busy putting on a statewide conference in NYC, Summer cleaning the house, transitioning my son from daycare to babysitter to summer camp! It just doesn't ever end.

On this rainy Friday, yet another one, I am making plans for my weekend soap ventures. I must admit that when I walk into my favorite health food stores, I am always thinking about soap. I see packages of poppy seeds, chamomile, spices and herbs and I wonder how can I incorporate these products into my soaps. My mind wanders with ideas and thoughts and since I am on several yahoo soap groups, I have been able to get some great ideas as to what I can do. I am excited about the possibilites and hope to have them posted soon on my Etsy site.

Sunday in Park Slope Brooklyn

Today in NYC it was an absolutely beautiful day. I had gone to Park Slope Brooklyn with my son to walk around and visit my friend Delores (www.DaisyMayNaturalSoap) at the Park Slope Food Market. It was great seeing her and of course I had to buy some of her soaps. I love supporting my fellow soapmakers and what a good way to spend money.

My son also took in the pleasure of purchasing 6 matchbox cars for $1.00 on a local stoop sale. It was fun watching him chose which 6 he wanted. I gave him the dollar so he could feel like a big boy making his very own purchase. I look forward to see what the rest of the summer will bring.

Good Morning,

I am so glad it is Friday but not happy that it is raining so much. That is probably because that means I am going to have a bad hair day but the truth of the matter is our flowers, trees and grass need the rain. So at the end of the day that is what matters most. I can always put my hair in a bun and hope for the best!

I actually wish I could stay home today and catch up on all of my favorite soap pages, blog, websites and maybe even place an order. I am sure I will be able to catch up this weekend and hope to find some great stuff online.

What another beautiful day to the end of this holiday weekend.

I just wanted to say thanks to all the woman and men who have served and continue to serve our beautiful country. I don't believe in war but I do believe in supporting our troops. I hope they come home safe and soon so their loved ones can hold and kiss them again.

It is days like this that I love and cherish. I had a pretty productive weekend with my son and our friends. A few times I would see a beautiful flower or smell the air so clean and crisp and I would think of soap and what new creation I can add to my product line. I may have to spend some time at the shore to really become inspired.

I just wanted to send a quick hello to everyone and soon I will return with a new soaping venture.

Saturday morning

Hi everyone, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful Saturday morning. It is funny how I am walking around my house itching to create something, like a new bar of soap. However I do have plans to go to the circus with my son and his friends and the moms. I love days like this, when the sun is shining, the air is cool, and the flowers are in bloom.

I want to wish my friend Delores (http://www.daisysoapgirl.blogspot.com/) a great day at her street fair today. I am sure she is going to do well and she will have meet great people who will fall in love with her soap.

On my way back from taking care of stuff from school and I realized I wanted to mention one more person that I just recently met.

Not too long ago I participated in an artist fair in Astoria that was put together by Astoria Events. There was a fellow soapmaker who owns a store in Astoria there as well. I had no idea there was a soap shop in my area but I didn't see it as competition. I see Vivian and her Little Soap Shop (http://www.thelittlesoapshop.net/) as another networking resource for me.

I recently visited Vivian in her shop and boy I felt like I walked into my future. Her shop located on 36th St right off of Ditmars Blvd. is my dream come true, it is small but quaint!

When I walked in Vivian was measuring out her lye and she had this ginormous gas mask on. I didn't want to disturb her so I told her to continue doing what she was doing. When she was done I introduced myself and she was just as excited to know I existed in Astoria. She was a delight to speak to and she was so kind to me and my son. She offered me the chance to have a basket of my samples in her store so I can drum up some business. How wonderful is that of her! Please visit Vivian if you can and buy some of her soap. I of course I bought 3 and I am loving it!!

My Inspirations

As I start this blog, I have been thinking about what I was going to write next. I thought it would be nice to take this time to acknowledge the amazing people I have met along my journey.

As I mentioned in my profile I came across this incredible tour group based out of Australia called Aroma Tours (http://www.aroma-tours.com/). I saw that they hosted a tour called Provence Aromatherapy Tour and I was hooked. I booked my flight to Marseille France via the way of Belgium and booked my spot on the tour. This was my first time traveling out of the country so needless to say I had to get a passport and study up on Provence. I was so excited about this trip and if you know me, you know I tend to have big girl moments, well this was one of those moments.

I can't even begin to explain what this week in Provence did to me. It opened up my eyes to Europe, to food, to great wine and to meeting fantastic people. One woman I shared a room with was Joanne Landers. Can you believe we were paired up because she lived in New Jersey but that wasn't the crazy part. The crazy part was that she had a daughter who lived right around the corner from me in little ole Astoria!! Joanne and I keep in touch via email and she is one amazing woman. The best part was that we were like 2 giddy high school girls at night laughing so much that we barely slept! I can go on and on about Provence but to be honest you need to experience it yourself. So please check out their website and if you drop then an email please tell them I said hello! Ok one more funny bit, you would think that all the different people Jim and Robbi meet along their ways, why would they remember me? Well they do and that is because on one of our ventures experiencing the countryside, we visited a rose garden that was high in the mountains and there was this "special" wall of rocks that was said to have the ability to make one fertile. Ok did I mention that I was going to meet my new husband (now ex!! LOL) in Paris for a week after Provence? So yes, I jokingly rubbed myself all over the rock and let's just say someone came home with a bun in the oven. Oh yes, back to the point, Jim and Robbi remember me from my moment on the rock!! LOL

Moving into the future, I kept learning about Aromatherapy and discovered that one can make their own soap. My new passion began and I am so very glad that I have developed the addiction of soap making. The first person I met was Sue Nadel (http://www.youscentme.com/) at a soap meet up group. The group never took off but my friendship with Sue did. We took a soapmaking class with Ursula Basch from The Herbal Bear (http://www.herbalbear.com/) and we were hooked. As excited we both were we both agreed that we needed each other to make soap. See making soap includes mixing water and lye with the oils and this sorta scared us because of the hazards that can occur if not done properly. Sue would also come to my house and we would experiment and that is were the love of my Oatmeal Soap began. My son also loves Sue and her husband that he asks all the time when is she coming over. She is a wonderful person and I am glad she is a part of our lives.

Soap making is a small world and while searching along on yahoo groups and meetup groups, Sue and I discoverd Delores Harris from Brooklyn NY (http://www.daisymaynaturalsoap.com/). After reading that you can see why I adore Delores. She has been a great support and always is there when you have questions. Not to mention that she is a certified soapmaker by the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild Inc (http://www.soapguild.org/). I hope to one day be a part of this organization but for now, I will continue working on my craft. Delores also runs a Meetup group called the CP Brooklyn Soapmakers and here is when a group of us ladies get together monthly and experiment, share, chat and learn from one another.

There are many more I would like to give kudos to but for now I wanted to honor these woman before I lose all of my thoughts to a sleepy haze.

Today is the beginning of my blogging experience. I am sure there is a lot to learn but I thought I might as well start now and learn as I go.
